Assam’s Kapili River water level rises rapidly after opening of Khandong Dam gates
The water level of the Kapili River has begun rising steadily following the opening of seven gates of the Khandong Dam in Umrangso, prompting authorities to issue alerts for residents living along the riverbanks.
Reports indicate that foamy and fast-flowing waters are being witnessed in several stretches of the river as a result of the increased discharge from the reservoir.
The gates of the Khandong Dam were opened on Sunday after water levels in the reservoir rose significantly due to continuous rainfall in the region. The release of water has led to a noticeable increase in the river's flow downstream.
Meanwhile, the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has issued an advisory to the district administrations of 18 districts in Assam, urging them to alert residents residing near the river and vulnerable low-lying areas.
Authorities have advised people to remain vigilant, avoid venturing into the river, and take necessary precautionary measures.
District administrations are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with concerned agencies to prevent any untoward incidents amid the rising water levels.
