Residents of Assam's Chamarpara, under Dholmara in the Kokrajhar Assembly constituency, have launched a large-scale protest raising the slogan - "No Road, No Vote" - demanding the immediate construction of a much-needed road in the area.
The protest comes after years of neglect and suffering caused by the poor condition of roads, which have become a significant hurdle for pedestrians and commuters alike.
The locals are specifically demanding the construction of a road connecting Nayapara Nachanguri to Chamarpara, which has been a long-pending demand.
In a formal move, the residents have submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BTR Chief Pramod Boro through the Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner, seeking their intervention in resolving the issue.
The protesters have also issued a stern warning that they will boycott votes in the upcoming elections if their demands are not fulfilled.
Despite decades of independence, the lack of proper transportation facilities continues to plague the area leaving over 500 school-going children and patients requiring ambulance services deprived of basic access. During the monsoon season the roads turn into knee-deep waterlogged pathways making commuting an unbearable challenge for locals.
The protesters have firmly resolved to abstain from voting in the upcoming BTC elections if the road construction is not completed before the polls.
The residents have made an emotional appeal to BTR Chief Pramod Boro, local MLA Lawrence Islary, and the Assam Government urging them to prioritize the road construction and alleviate their longstanding plight.
