Assam's Kolong river revival faces delay in Kaliabor, CM stresses expert opinion

The ambitious "Revival Project of Kolong river," initiated with the hope of bringing the dead Kolong river back to life, now faces significant hurdles. Despite an enormous allocation of over Rs 20 crore, the dream of rejuvenating the river may remain unfulfilled as challenges continue to mount.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a public address, highlighted the difficulties associated with the project. "We need to consult with experts and the public regarding this project to assess its effectiveness. If the riverbanks breach again, the public won't forgive us. Revitalizing a river is a significant undertaking, so public discussion is essential. For the next two years, we won't be able to proceed with any actions because the riverbanks are too fragile," stated CM Sarma.

The project, launched with great fanfare on October 30, 2020, encountered a severe setback on July 2, when the dam at the mouth of the Kallang was destroyed by floods. This incident has raised serious concerns about the feasibility and sustainability of the project, prompting the government to reconsider its approach.

CM Sarma stressed the importance of involving both experts and the public in future decisions related to the project. The fragile condition of the riverbanks necessitates a cautious approach, and any hasty actions could lead to further complications.

The Chief Minister's statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for a thorough evaluation before proceeding. The revival of the Kolong river, once seen as a beacon of hope for the region, now hangs in the balance as the government grapples with the complexities of the project.
