Assam's Moran community observe Bohag Bihu with traditional 'Goru Bihu' celebrations in Kakopathar

The Moran community, one of Assam’s prominent indigenous ethnic groups, marked the beginning of Bohag Bihu with the celebration of Goru Bihu on Wednesday, April 16 in Kakopothar under Tinsukia district. Known for their rich cultural identity, including a distinct language, traditional attire, and customs, the Moran people continue to uphold their vibrant heritage through such age-old festivals.

Goru Bihu, which is traditionally observed on the first day of Bohag, involves ceremonial bathing of domestic animals, particularly cattle. In Tezi No. 1 village, the occasion was celebrated with enthusiasm, drawing community participation in large numbers. Villagers bathed their livestock in the river, using seasonal herbs and vegetables such as bottle gourd, brinjal, bitter gourd, and turmeric — a ritual deeply rooted in agrarian tradition believed to purify and rejuvenate the animals.

In a unique display of cultural continuity, the community also extended the ritual to elephants, bathing them in a traditional manner as part of the celebration.

As per custom, the Moran community observes Goru Bihu on the first day of the Assamese New Year, followed by Manuh Bihu (People’s Bihu) the next day, which focuses on human relationships, blessings from elders, and cultural performances.

The celebration in Kakopathar was organized under the leadership of the Moran Students' Union along with support from other community-based organizations, ensuring the preservation and promotion of this vital cultural legacy.
