Assam's Nagaon journalist allegedly assaulted while covering suspected illegal activities at Dhaba

Journalist Barun Bikash Bora of the web portal Drishtikon NE was allegedly assaulted by a group of people at a dhaba near the Borghat bypass in Nagaon while attempting to gather information about suspected illegal activities, according to reports.

The incident reportedly took place under the jurisdiction of Nagaon Sadar Police Station. Bora allegedly encountered a group of youths at the dhaba and attempted to record the scene on camera, following which the dhaba owner and others allegedly confronted him.

According to the reports, the journalist was surrounded and assaulted. The attackers allegedly threatened him with sharp weapons, including machetes and knives, leaving him seriously injured.

Police personnel from Borghat reportedly reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and rescued Bora from the group. He was reportedly found in a bloodied and critical condition.

The report also alleged that the dhaba owner and others attempted to counter the allegations by accusing the journalist of demanding money in the name of news coverage. These claims have not been independently verified.

Local residents have alleged that some dhabas along both sides of the national highway near Borghat have been operating as centres for illegal activities, including suspected sex trade. They have also raised allegations of intimidation and blackmail against customers and journalists visiting the establishments.

The alleged attack has triggered concern among sections of the local community, with residents and various organisations demanding the arrest of those involved and strict legal action.

Further details regarding the police investigation and the condition of the injured journalist were not immediately available.
