Assam's Nagaon-Tezpur highway faces collapse threat, massive cavity opens up near Kaliabor

A newly constructed stretch of the Nagaon-Tezpur National Highway near Kaliabor Tiniali has developed a dangerous cavity underneath the road, raising concerns over the safety of commuters.

The alarming situation has emerged near the flyover, where the soil beneath the newly constructed road has reportedly eroded, creating a large pit underneath the carriageway.

The cavity has reportedly taken on a tunnel-like appearance, with a significant portion of the soil beneath the road washed away. The condition has made movement along the stretch potentially hazardous, particularly for heavy vehicles.

Local residents have alleged that the problem has occurred due to poor-quality construction and alleged negligence by the contractor. They claimed that despite the dangerous condition being visible, neither the construction agency nor the local administration has taken adequate steps to address the situation.

The road construction work has been attributed to a contractor named Ganapati, with residents questioning the quality of execution and maintenance of the newly built stretch.

Locals have urged the authorities to immediately inspect the site, cordon off the vulnerable portion and undertake necessary repair work to prevent a possible road collapse and avert a major accident.
