'At age seven, I first learned about Lachit Barphukan': Amit Shah in Assam

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam, on Saturday, highlighting the historical significance of the legendary Ahom general and the progress made under the Narendra Modi-led government.

Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah emphasized the national recognition of Lachit Barphukan, who played a crucial role in defending Assam against the Mughals.

"I was just seven years old when I was first taught about Lachit Barphukan. Following this, I read nothing about him until my graduation, as he remained restricted to Assam. However, his biography is now available in 23 languages, and he continues to inspire children across the country," Shah said.

The Home Minister also took the opportunity to contrast the financial assistance received by Assam under different governments. "Under the 10-year Congress rule, Assam received Rs 1.27 lakh crore as devolution grant and grant-in-aid. But in PM Modi's rule, this amount was increased to Rs 4.95 lakh crore—four times more than what Congress provided. Why did the Congress ignore Assam and not allow peace to prosper here? But under PM Modi's rule, everything has been restored in Assam," he stated.

The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy is expected to enhance law enforcement training and contribute to Assam’s internal security. The academy has been developed as a state-of-the-art facility aimed at improving policing standards in the region.
