In a dramatic rescue operation, the police at the Assam-Mizoram border successfully recovered an auto driver, Ashraful Haque, who had been kidnapped on January 26. The rescue took place late on Sunday night, bringing relief to his family after days of uncertainty.
According to Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta, Haque was abducted by armed miscreants from Mizoram and held captive across the border. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of ₹10 lakh, sending video footage to his family to pressure them for payment. Upon receiving information, the Cachar police launched a coordinated effort, leading to his safe recovery.
SP Mahatta further stated that preliminary investigations indicate Haque may have links to drug trafficking, which might have played a role in the kidnapping. The case is currently under investigation, and authorities are looking into the involvement of organized criminal networks in the region.
The incident has raised concerns over security along the Assam-Mizoram border, an area often witnessing tensions and criminal activities. Police officials have assured intensified vigilance to prevent such occurrences in the future.
