Bangladeshi national detained in Assam's Hailakandi for alleged illegal entry

A Bangladeshi national was detained by police in Assam's Hailakandi district for allegedly entering India illegally through the India-Bangladesh border, officials said on Monday, July 6.

The man, identified as Shahed Ahmed, was detained from the Palichara Part II area under the Jamira Police Outpost. Preliminary investigations suggest that he is a resident of Rasulpur village under Zakiganj Police Station in Sylhet district of Bangladesh.

According to police sources, Shahed Ahmed had married an Indian woman from Palichara village in Hailakandi several years ago. Following their marriage, he reportedly worked in different parts of the Northeast, including Meghalaya. His wife and their daughter have been living in Palichara village for the past two-and-a-half years.

Police said Ahmed had arrived in Hailakandi two days ago to take his daughter with him. Acting on specific intelligence, personnel from Jamira Police launched an operation and detained him.

Preliminary inquiry indicates that the accused allegedly entered Assam through an illegal route used for cross-border smuggling in the Sribhumi district along the India-Bangladesh border. Officials, however, said the exact circumstances surrounding his entry are still under investigation.

Ahmed is currently in police custody and is being questioned. Police said appropriate legal action will be initiated based on the outcome of the investigation.
