Bangladeshi youth abandoned by broker in Guwahati appears before Sribhumi court seeking repatriation

A Bangladeshi youth allegedly brought into India on the pretext of employment was later abandoned in Guwahati and eventually appeared before a court in Assam’s Sribhumi district seeking assistance to return to his home country, officials said.

The youth, identified as Deep Islam Sheikh, is currently under the custody of Sribhumi Sadar Police Station after being handed over to the police by the court through the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA).

According to an advocate associated with the DLSA, the youth was allegedly lured into India by a broker identified as Ragbi, who had promised him employment opportunities in Guwahati. After reaching the city, however, the broker reportedly abandoned the youth at Guwahati Railway Station and fled.

Left stranded and without support, Deep Islam Sheikh boarded a train to Silchar in an attempt to return to Bangladesh. While searching for a route to the international border, he eventually reached Sribhumi district and appeared before the District and Sessions Court situated on Kalibari Road, where he narrated the entire sequence of events.

Following the hearing, the court informed the police through the District Legal Services Authority, after which the youth was taken into custody for further verification and legal procedures.

Authorities said it remains unclear through which route or border point the youth entered India. Officials also stated that no Bangladeshi identity documents were found in his possession, making it difficult to ascertain his exact age and identity details immediately.

The youth reportedly belongs to Barughuni area under the Gopalganj sub-division of Bangladesh.
