Reacting to activist Syeda Hameed’s comments on Bangladeshis in Assam, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia said they were a direct consequence of the “tunnel” created by the Government of India through the implementation of the CAA. He held Hameed responsible for her statements, asserting firmly, “Bangladeshis cannot stay in Assam.”
The Congress leader categorically distanced himself from remarks made by cleric Arshad Madani, criticizing the religiously exclusive tone of his comments. “Madani spoke only for one religion. He should have spoken for everyone,” Saikia said.
Debabrata Saikia, launched a sharp critique of the government while addressing a press conference at the Greater Bongaigaon Press Club on Monday, August 25. The senior Congress leader touched upon several pressing issues ranging from the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to opposition unity and local infrastructure concerns.
Addressing questions on opposition alignment, Saikia clarified that he was unaware of any formal “All Assam Convention.” However, he hinted that an all-opposition alliance could take shape ahead of the elections. He also revealed that Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi may be included in such an alliance, adding that he had personally extended an invitation to him.
Turning to local issues, Saikia alleged attempts to privatize the Bongaigaon Auditorium. After visiting the venue, he said he was astonished by its deteriorating condition and expressed strong concern over its neglect.
