Bengali community protests in Assam's Lakhipur over Sribhumi incident, submits memorandum to administration
Members of the Bengali community staged a protest in Lakhipur against the alleged attack and harassment of Bengali families in Sribhumi, including claims that they were labelled Bangladeshis.
The protest was held in front of Swami Vivekananda Point at Fulertal, where demonstrators raised slogans and expressed their anger over the incident.
The protesters alleged that Bengali-speaking people living in the Barak Valley were repeatedly being insulted and harassed by being labelled Bangladeshis. They strongly condemned the alleged attack on Bengali families in Sribhumi on October 24, reportedly triggered by a dispute over an idol immersion procession.
Following the protest, a delegation submitted a memorandum containing five demands to the Lakhipur Sub-Divisional Commissioner. The demands included an impartial investigation into the incident, the arrest of those allegedly involved, the release of Bengali youths who had been arrested, and financial and medical assistance for the affected families.
The protesters maintained that no community should face humiliation or harassment on the basis of language or identity. They also urged the authorities to identify those responsible for the Sribhumi incident and take strict legal action against them.
