Bhupen Borah: Himanta Biswa Sarma admitted to my accusations; SIT investigation if Congress wins in 2026

In a sharp critique of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah has accused the CM of acknowledging corruption within his administration. Reacting from Delhi, Borah claimed that Sarma's media statements indirectly confirmed the allegations against him, particularly concerning family business interests.

Borah stated, "Today, the Chief Minister effectively admitted to the accusations I've made. His comments about his family business and the current political situation indicate that he is aware of the corruption issues within his government." He added that Sarma's remarks about future elections and property management suggest an implicit acceptance of these charges.

The Congress leader promised decisive action if his party comes to power in the 2026 elections. "Within the first 100 days of our government, we will form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe corruption cases under the BJP regime," Borah said. He said that any property acquired through corruption would be thoroughly investigated and its proceeds deposited into the government account.

Borah also addressed Sarma's comments about the BJP's electoral prospects, suggesting that the Chief Minister’s remarks reflect an acknowledgment of impending defeat. "If Sarma is serious about his 'will' comments, he should submit it to the Chief Secretary for safekeeping. We will then decide whether to proceed with forming the SIT," Borah said.

Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended his family against allegations made by Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah.

In response, Sarma addressed the concerns during a media interaction, specifically defending his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. He stated, "Whatever Riniki Bhuyan Sarma is doing, she is giving and will continue to give all to the people of Assam. Nobody will take it. She will not keep anything for herself or our children." Sarma said that even their news channel, News Live, would eventually be handed over to the people.

Sarma also addressed criticisms about their land holdings and business ventures. He noted that the land in Ganeshguri, previously criticized, has been developed into a Sai Baba Mandir, and plans are underway to build a Shivji Mandir on their Zoo Road property. "Even the resorts and all are for the people of Assam. Riniki is not keeping anything for herself," he said.

Rejecting the allegations against his wife, Sarma claimed that profits from their businesses are reinvested into community projects. He urged the public to view their assets as belonging to the state and emphasized that News Live is meant for its employees.
