Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah took a sharp dig at Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, accusing him of abandoning his own stance against corruption.
Commenting on Sonowal's participation in the panchayat poll campaign, Borah recalled that it was Sonowal who once wrote a book criticising corrupt leaders in the Congress.
"The first person to write a book claiming bad people were in Congress was Sarbananda Sonowal himself. He named Himanta Biswa Sarma in connection with the Saradha and Louis Berger scams, promising that a BJP government would probe and punish him. But what did he do? He made him Chief Minister and left Assam," Borah said.
He further accused Sonowal of deceiving the people of Assam and comfortably settling "near the seashore"—referring to his relocation to a national role—after "lying to the people."

Bhupen Borah also attacked Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of pretending to be a monk while having a questionable past.
Responding to Sarma’s recent comments questioning the citizenship of Gaurav Gogoi’s family, Borah said, “When the Chief Minister goes to dig for kechu (an earthworm), a snake comes out. He may pretend to be a monk, but everyone knows his past. So, I won’t go digging for an earthworm.”
Bora made the remarks while addressing a public election rally at Tapattary in Abhayapuri, Bongaigaon.
With the second phase of panchayat polls nearing its end, Bhupen Borah expressed confidence that the Congress would perform well in both the local body elections and the upcoming Assembly polls.
