Bhupen Kumar Borah calls Assam Cabinet’s UCC stand a ‘statesmanlike decision’, slams Gaurav Gogoi's comments

BJP leader Bhupen Kumar Borah on Wednesday, May 14 criticised remarks made by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi regarding the Assam government’s reported first Cabinet decision linked to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), alleging that the Congress leadership was disconnected from the sentiments of indigenous communities in the state.

Addressing the media in Guwahati, Borah said Gogoi’s recent statement was “totally against the sentiments of indigenous people” and claimed that the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee had failed to understand the concerns of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and other indigenous groups in Assam.

He alleged that the Congress party’s political approach was centred on supporting “certain communities” rather than representing the interests of the wider indigenous population of the state.

Borah also defended the decision taken by the government led by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, describing it as a “statesmanlike” move rather than a purely political decision.

The remarks come amid continuing political exchanges between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam over issues related to governance, identity politics and the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code
