BJP–AGP seat-sharing nearly final, formal announcement soon: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 24 said that seat-sharing discussions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its key ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are almost finalised, indicating that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is close to sealing its electoral strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said a formal announcement regarding the seat-sharing arrangement would be made in the coming days. He asserted that once the process is completed, all NDA partners would jointly seek the blessings of the people of Assam. Sarma expressed confidence that the alliance would once again receive a strong mandate based on its governance record and development initiatives across the state.
The Chief Minister also provided clarity on the ongoing talks with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He said seat-sharing discussions between the BJP and the AGP are at an advanced stage and are almost complete. According to Sarma, the formal announcement on this front will be made after Union Home Minister Amit Shah holds discussions with both parties.
“The day Amit Shah calls both parties, the seat-sharing arrangement will be officially announced,” Sarma said, underlining the central leadership’s role in finalising alliance decisions.
The BJP-led alliance has been projecting unity among its partners, while also expanding its outreach to regional forces to strengthen its electoral base.
With the seat-sharing formula nearing completion, the focus is now expected to shift towards campaign planning, candidate selection and joint rallies across the state. The BJP, which is seeking a third consecutive term in Assam, has repeatedly emphasised development, stability and strong governance as its core poll planks.
The formal announcement of alliances in the coming days is likely to set the tone for the election battle in Assam.
