BJP eyes ground breakthrough in Arunachal's Diyun ahead of panchayat polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is stepping up its grassroots push in Arunachal Pradesh, signalling an aggressive campaign to capture local bodies where it has traditionally struggled. The party’s rally-cum-meeting at Sompoi village under Diyun Gram Panchayat on December 11 drew hundreds of supporters, underscoring a visible shift in local political sentiment ahead of the 2025 Panchayat Raj elections.

The event was organised in support of 14/02 ZP Constituency candidate Lathow Onggam and was attended by prominent leaders, including BJP State Vice President and Namsai MLA Jingnu Namchoom, former MLA Somlung Mossang, Changlang District BJP President Roshan Neimu, and other district and village leaders.

Party representatives criticised the NCP’s performance in Diyun, saying the absence of BJP representation had slowed down development in areas such as infrastructure, road connectivity, and welfare implementation. They accused NCP MLA Nikh Kamin of misleading voters with his narrative of “coordination” between local and state-level leaders, arguing that real progress would come only if Panchayat institutions came under BJP control.

Namchoom, addressing the gathering, urged voters to “bring Diyun into the mainstream of Arunachal’s development,” adding that electing a BJP ZPM would ensure direct coordination with Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein. He claimed that greater alignment between local and state governance was necessary to realise the Prime Minister’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

Responding to public complaints about the deteriorating Diyun–Innao road, Namchoom said the BJP would secure funding even if the route fell outside the PMGSY framework. He suggested the project could instead be taken up under the Chief Minister Comprehensive Road Network Scheme or by the Rural Works Department, citing the existing Rs 2000 crore allocation for priority works.

District President Roshan Neimu also called on voters to choose continuity and stability, stating that the “double-engine government” had delivered tangible results across sectors and now aimed to extend those benefits to Diyun.

As the Panchayat elections approach, analysts expect a close contest between the BJP and NCP in the Diyun-Bordumsa belt. However, the scale of mobilisation and growing youth turnout in recent BJP events suggest the party’s local presence is gaining historic momentum.
