BJP fields Rameswar Teli from Duliajan for Assam Assembly Elections 2026
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 3, announced that Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli will contest from the Duliajan Assembly constituency in the upcoming Assam Assembly polls 2026.
Speaking to reporters in Kaziranga, Chief Minister Sarma confirmed the candidature, stating that Teli would represent the party from Duliajan in the upcoming polls. He further indicated that a separate candidate would be fielded from Mahmora, while making it clear that Teli would replace Terash Gowalla in Duliajan.
“As much as I believe, in place of Terash Gowalla, Rameswar Teli will be contesting from Duliajan constituency,” the Chief Minister said, putting to rest speculation surrounding the seat.
Addressing questions regarding the exclusion of newly inducted former AASU leader Sankarjyoti Baruah from the party’s ticket list, Sarma clarified that he had already informed Baruah that he would not be fielded in the upcoming elections.
“I had already made it clear to him that he will not be provided with the party ticket,” Sarma stated, underscoring the party’s internal clarity on candidate selection.
Meanwhile, the BJP has also announced its nominees for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in 2026. The party has fielded Terash Gowalla and Jogen Mohan from Assam for the Upper House.
In addition to the Assam nominees, the BJP cleared several candidates from other states. From Bihar, senior leader Nitin Nabin and Shivesh Kumar have been nominated. The party has also approved Laxmi Verma from Chhattisgarh, Sanjay Bhatia from Haryana, Manmohan Samal and Sujeet Kumar from Odisha, and Rahul Sinha from West Bengal.
The twin announcements — Teli’s candidature for the Assembly polls and the finalisation of Rajya Sabha nominees — reflect the BJP’s early groundwork and strategic positioning for the 2026 electoral cycle, both in Assam and beyond.
