“BJP government will change; I will win Sivasagar by over 50,000 votes,” says Akhil Gogoi on Assam polling day

As Assam goes to the polls on April 9 to elect representatives to its 126-member Legislative Assembly, Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar Assembly constituency candidate Akhil Gogoi expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government would be voted out of power.

Speaking to the media, Gogoi said that widespread public dissatisfaction with the current government would lead to a significant political shift in the state. “There is going to be a change in Assam. People are upset with the BJP government, and they want to change it. The BJP government will go, and it is certain that the opposition will form its government here,” he stated.

Confident of his electoral prospects, Gogoi predicted a decisive victory from the Sivasagar constituency. “I am going to win from Sivasagar with a margin of over 50,000 votes,” he said, adding that voters are eager to bring about political change. He also congratulated the people of Assam for participating enthusiastically in the democratic process, stating, “I congratulate everyone who is coming out to vote for change.”

Referring to a recent incident of violence, Gogoi alleged that Bidyut Saikia, General Secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), Assam, was attacked in Sivasagar on the night of April 8 and is currently undergoing treatment at the Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital. He urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to remain calm amid the violent scenes. “I humbly request the Chief Minister to calm down. Every time the government changes, tensions arise, and this time too, the BJP government will change,” he said.

Highlighting his political role, Gogoi described himself as one of the most active leaders and MLAs in Assam. He also made serious allegations against his electoral opponent, claiming that the person contesting against him in the constituency is a “big murderer.” However, no official confirmation regarding this allegation has been provided.

Polling across Assam began at 7:00 AM and will continue until 5:00 PM, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
