BJP likely to contest 10 seats in Barak Valley, AGP to fight 3: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 14 indicated that the seat-sharing arrangement between the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally Asom Gana Parishad in the Barak Valley region has largely been finalised.
Sharing details of the alliance formula, Sarma said that the AGP will contest three constituencies in the valley — Sonai, South Karimganj, and Algapur — while the BJP will field candidates in the remaining ten seats.
“AGP will get three seats in Barak Valley. They will contest from Sonai, South Karimganj and Algapur. Talks on seat-sharing are underway. Today Amit Shah arrived, and by tomorrow we will declare the seats,” Sarma said, indicating that a formal announcement could be made soon.
Meanwhile, the BJP is expected to release its much-awaited list of candidates for the upcoming elections after March 18, following crucial deliberations by the party’s top decision-making bodies in New Delhi.
Assam BJP president and Member of Parliament Dilip Saikia said that key meetings are scheduled to take place on March 17, where the final names of candidates will be discussed.
“We have a meeting in Delhi most probably on March 17. After our election committee meeting as well as the Parliamentary Board meeting on March 17, or maybe on March 18, the central party will release the list of candidates,” Saikia told India Today NE.
The meetings are expected to involve the BJP’s central leadership and senior party functionaries, including members of the party’s election committee and Parliamentary Board, who will deliberate on the final candidate selection.
Adding further significance to the political developments, Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, arrived in Guwahati on Saturday evening as part of his official visit to Assam.
Shah landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Borjhar aboard a special flight from Ludhiana, where he was received by senior BJP leaders and party functionaries.
During his visit, the Union Home Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the Pragjyotishpur Medical College in Guwahati on Sunday morning. The institution is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand opportunities for medical education in the region.
Later in the day, Shah will also attend a special conference organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the BJP. The conference is expected to bring together youth leaders and party workers from across the state, focusing on organisational consolidation and youth engagement ahead of the elections.
