BJP to field 4–6 candidates in BTR for Assam Assembly polls: Himanta Biswa Sarma

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will field four to six candidates from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday, February 16.

Addressing party workers and supporters at Tamulpur, Sarma confirmed that the BJP intends to contest from Tangla, Goreswar and Tamulpur constituencies, where the party recorded encouraging results in the last Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections.

Highlighting the party’s growing strength in the region, the Chief Minister said the BJP’s performance in the previous BTC polls has boosted its confidence ahead of the Assembly elections. He expressed optimism that the party would further consolidate its presence in BTR.

Reacting to recent political developments, including the resignation of senior Congress leader Bhupen Kumar Borah from the Indian National Congress, Sarma claimed that more leaders may leave the party as the elections approach. He alleged that the public no longer sees a future in the Congress and that the party has drifted away from grassroots issues.

“The Congress has become a party of a few high-level leaders and is no longer connected with the common people,” he said.

Sarma further stated that the BJP would welcome friendly cooperation with regional parties such as the United People's Party Liberal and the Bodoland People's Front in the larger interest of development and political stability in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
