BJP workers stop Congress MLA Asif Nazar’s vehicle in Assam's Morigaon, scuffle breaks out

A confrontation broke out between BJP and Congress workers in Morigaon district on Tuesday, September 22, after BJP workers allegedly stopped the vehicle of Congress MLA Asif Nazar at Garoimari and raised “Go Back Asif Nazar” slogans.

According to reports, BJP workers blocked Nazar’s vehicle, following which a scuffle broke out between workers of the two parties.

The situation was later brought under control after the intervention of the Morigaon Senior Superintendent of Police, who helped escort Nazar away from the spot.

The incident comes a day after violence was reported during Congress campaigning in Samaguri in connection with the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.

On Monday, a Congress campaign convoy carrying Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel and other leaders was allegedly targeted with stones while travelling towards an election meeting in Samaguri.

Congress alleged that BJP supporters were behind the incident, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that the Samaguri incident was a clash between rival factions within the Congress.

Sarma had urged the Congress state leadership to address its internal differences and said political rivalries should not spill onto the streets or disturb public order.
