BJP’s Devasish Sharma breaks silence on allegations ahead of Assam's Nagaon bypoll

With the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll campaign gaining momentum, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma on September 24 stepped up his outreach across the Jagiroad constituency, addressing election meetings at 12 locations under various panchayats.

Sharma’s campaign comes amid questions and allegations raised by his political opponents. AIUDF chief and candidate Badruddin Ajmal has publicly challenged Sharma to converse with him in English, while senior Congress leader Abdul Khaleque had earlier raised questions over Sharma’s previous tenure as Nagaon Deputy Commissioner and his role as the Returning Officer during the election period.

Khaleque had alleged that Sharma, while serving as the district election officer, may have been aware of the specific identification codes associated with EVM machines. He also questioned the role of the Election Commission in the matter. These are allegations made by the Congress leader and have not been independently established.

Against this backdrop, questions have also been raised over how Sharma views his transition from a former district administrator to a BJP candidate and how he seeks to address concerns being raised by rival parties.
