Brahmaputra erosion threatens Lakhimpur embankment, Jayanta Mallabaruah assures immediate protection measures

Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah on Wednesday, August 5 visited the erosion-hit Bonpuroi-Jamuguri area in Lakhimpur district and assured immediate government intervention to prevent further erosion after the Brahmaputra River posed a serious threat to the Jamuguri-Arimora embankment, a key flood protection structure for the region.
The embankment came under severe pressure after rising water levels and strong currents in the Brahmaputra triggered intense riverbank erosion. A large crack developed along the embankment, raising fears of an imminent breach, with a substantial portion reportedly on the verge of collapsing into the river.
Officials warned that a breach of the embankment could inundate vast areas under the Bihpuria and Gohpur Assembly constituencies, prompting concern among residents and the district administration.
The deteriorating situation triggered panic in nearby villages, with many residents spending the night securing their belongings and shifting to safer locations in anticipation of possible flooding. Bihpuria MLA Bhupen Kumar Bora visited the affected site during the night to assess the situation, while the Lakhimpur district administration remained on high alert.
Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Baruah reached the erosion site at around 2 pm and reviewed the situation with officials. During the inspection, he directed the concerned departments to undertake all necessary anti-erosion measures on a war footing to prevent further damage and safeguard the embankment.
Chief Minister Sarma also spoke to the Finance Minister over the phone during the visit and assured local residents that the state government would take all necessary steps to protect the embankment and prevent flooding in the vulnerable areas.
The Finance Minister was accompanied by Bihpuria MLA Bhupen Kumar Bora, Gohpur MLA Utpal Bora and Ranganadi MLA Rishiraj Hazarika during the inspection.
