Bridge collapses in Assam’s Cachar; NDRF and CRPF deployed

The Harang bridge in the Bhangarpar area of Assam’s Cachar district collapsed late night on June 17 due to overloading, sparking major safety and connectivity concerns in the region.

Despite repeated warnings and representations made by locals to departmental officials regarding the deteriorating condition of the Harang bridge on the Kalain-Silchar road, no preventive measures were reportedly taken.

Residents allege that overloaded vehicles frequently crossed the bridge at night, contributing to its eventual collapse.

In response to the critical situation, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been deployed to ensure the safe passage of school children and to assist in restoring local connectivity.

Additionally, 147 personnel from the CRPF and commando forces have been stationed in the area to manage the situation and prevent further disruption.

The incident has renewed public outrage over the lack of infrastructure oversight and the urgent need for preventive maintenance of critical civic structures. An investigation into the collapse is expected to follow.
