Bridge connecting Assam-Arunachal border collapses, disrupts daily communication

A major part of the bridge connecting Rangapara via Manashree-Chardwara has been washed away by the strong currents of the Manashree River, leaving several villages stranded. The collapse, caused by the first monsoon's rising waters, has severely disrupted communication on the Assam-Arunachal border.

The sudden destruction of the bridge has thrown the lives of residents into turmoil. This bridge, essential for daily commuting, has nearly stopped functioning, isolating many villages. In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, Ashok Singhal, the MLA from the Dhekiajuli constituency and a minister, had initiated temporary repairs by dumping land on the bridge to facilitate traffic. However, these repairs proved insufficient against the heavy monsoon rains.

Locals have voiced their frustration, alleging that the absence of proper storage provisions on either side of the bridge contributed to its failure. The washed-away portion has not only hindered the movement of people but has also halted government vehicles, creating significant challenges for schools and hospitals. Students and patients are particularly affected, as safe transportation options have become scarce.

"They have received money to repair the bridge in the past but the situation remains the same and we don't know where the money goes. We are facing extreme difficulties. Looking at which we cast our vote to the candidate this election but the situation remains the same", said a resident.

The situation has forced residents, including school and college students, to navigate dangerous paths to continue their daily routines. In response, locals are demanding urgent action from MLA and Minister Ashok Singhal to repair the damaged section of the bridge and restore safe passage.

The collapse of the bridge has highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the region and the need for more robust solutions to withstand natural calamities. As the monsoon season progresses, the urgency for repair and reconstruction grows, with residents hoping for swift and effective action to reconnect their communities.
