BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary backs full ST status for six communities, demands no sub-categorisation
The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) government led by Chief Hagrama Mohilary has taken a major decision regarding the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status demand of six communities, going beyond the recommendations submitted earlier by the Assam Government’s ministerial group.
The decision was approved during an executive meeting chaired by Mohilary.
Announcing the resolution, the BTC Chief said the council has no objection to granting ST status to the six communities and insisted that the status must be provided without any sub-categorisation within the BTC area. Mohilary stated that categories such as ST(P) and ST(H) should not exist in the region, and added that the council would formally communicate this stand to the Central Government and the Registrar General of India (RGI).
The BTC government has also sought a judicial inquiry into the November 29 vandalism at the BTC Secretariat, carried out during a protest by tribal student groups.
In addition, the council has decided to relieve three university officials from their positions, alleging their role in facilitating the incident. Those removed include Dr. Subung Basumatary, Registrar, Bodoland University, Dr. Birphung Narzary, Deputy Registrar, Dr. Dimasa Daibrang Mushahary, Registrar, Kokrajhar University.
Mohilary alleged that the attack on the BTC Secretariat occurred with the support of these officials.
