CAA harmful for Assam, claims AGP; seeks help from Supreme Court

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has once again voiced its strong opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), citing its "harmful" impact on Assam while stating that it might be beneficial for other parts of the country.

They urged to station the persecuted refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh to other parts of the country but not in Assam. They sought the Supreme Court's help to have their voices heard.

AGP leaders said that politics is dynamic, that it's not a static state. The AGP leaders further added that changes in India’s political landscape are inevitable in Assam as well.

Speaking at a series of meetings held in Assam's Bajali, AGP central leader Dharmeswar Roy reiterated the party’s commitment to safeguarding Assam’s regional interests.

“We, as a regional party, have made political understandings with various parties at different times. Our priority remains the well-being of Assam and its people,” he said.

The meetings, which involved several mandal committees of the AGP, were organised to discuss strategies and assess the evolving political scenario.

Former Barpeta Lok Sabha MP, Kumar Deepak Das, was also present at the meet. He expressed confidence that the AGP’s role in shaping Assam’s future politics remains crucial.

“Political changes in the country are evident, and Assam will not remain untouched by these shifts,” Das said.

He also spoke about the importance of regional unity and the AGP’s dedication to ensuring that Assam’s unique cultural and demographic identity is preserved amidst these changes.
