Call for maintenance of martyrs’ memorial, Bhupen Hazarika statue gains momentum in Doomdooma
Residents of Rupai Siding under Doomdooma Revenue Circle in Tinsukia district have intensified their demand for immediate beautification and proper maintenance of the Shahid Bedi and the statue of Bhupen Hazarika.
The memorial and statue, inaugurated in October last year by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Doomdooma Regional Committee, were established to mark the birth centenary of the legendary artist.
Locals said the site, envisioned as a symbol of inspiration and cultural pride, has not received adequate upkeep since its inauguration. The Shahid Bedi honours martyrs, while the statue commemorates Dr. Hazarika, widely regarded as the voice of Assam’s cultural identity.
“These are ideals for our new generations. They can learn from here and keep Assam’s pride and history safe,” a resident said.
Another local emphasised the cultural significance of the site, noting that Hazarika’s legacy goes beyond music. “He was not just an artist, he was the voice of Assam’s soul. Such a place deserves dignity and care,” the resident added.
Citizens have urged authorities and AASU members to take prompt action to improve the condition of the site. Suggestions include installation of proper lighting, regular cleanliness drives, plantation, and protective infrastructure.
“If preserved well, this site can inspire youth and stand as a beacon of Assam’s rich legacy,” a local youth said, echoing the growing demand for restoration and maintenance.
