Car ownership dispute turns violent in Assam's Cachar, mediator stabbed

A dispute over the purchase and ownership of a car turned violent in Dholai, Cachar district of Assam, after a mediator attempting to settle the matter between two brothers-in-law was allegedly stabbed and seriously injured.

The incident took place on the night of August 7 at Islamabad village under Dholai Police Station.

The injured person has been identified as Faruk Ahmed Majumdar. He sustained serious stab injuries and was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition.

According to local sources, Badarul Islam and Nurul Islam are brothers-in-law who had jointly purchased a car a few days ago. Although the vehicle was registered in Nurul Islam's name, differences later arose between the two over its ownership and responsibilities.

The dispute reportedly intensified over the repayment of the car's instalments. The finance company had allegedly been repeatedly contacting Nurul Islam regarding the outstanding instalments.

In an attempt to resolve the dispute, Faruk Ahmed Majumdar, a senior relative from their in-laws' family, had been mediating between the two.

On the night of August 7, Nurul Islam reportedly came to his in-laws residence at Islamabad and was discussing the matter with Faruk.

According to the allegation, while the two were sitting beside each other and discussing the dispute, Nurul Islam allegedly took out a knife that he had concealed and stabbed Faruk in the chest.

Faruk reportedly collapsed after sustaining the serious injury, following which Nurul Islam allegedly fled the scene.

Family members and local residents immediately rushed the injured man to a hospital. However, due to the severity of his condition, he was later shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.

The incident has created tension in the Islamabad area. Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing and take further legal action based on the findings.
