Central team assesses flood damage in Assam's Sivasagar; minister says district recorded 31 deaths

A Central government team on July 27 visited flood-affected areas of Assam's Sivasagar district to assess the damage caused by the recent floods and review ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The delegation conducted field inspections and held a review meeting with officials at the office of the Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner. Assam Cabinet Ministers Keshab Mahanta and Bimal Bora were present during the meeting.

As part of the visit, the team inspected relief camps at Phukan Nagar Primary School, Betbari and Nazira, where they reviewed relief arrangements and interacted with officials overseeing rehabilitation measures.

Addressing a press conference, Minister Bimal Bora said Sivasagar district has recorded 31 flood-related deaths, while three people remain missing. He added that seven missing persons cases have been registered with the police.

Bora further said Charaideo district has reported 20 flood-related deaths, while Golaghat (2), Dhemaji (3) and Sonitpur (1) have also reported fatalities linked to the floods.

Highlighting the extent of damage in Sivasagar, the minister said 215 roads have been damaged, nearly 350 schools have been affected, 462 Jal Jeevan Mission projects have suffered damage, and 19 embankments have been breached or damaged across the district.

The Central team's findings will be submitted to the Union government and are expected to help determine the extent of financial assistance and rehabilitation measures for the flood-affected districts of Assam.
