Complaint filed against content creator over allegedly “provocative” video in Assam's Dhubri

A formal police complaint has been lodged against social media content creator Bhaskarr Dutta for allegedly circulating “communally provocative” and defamatory content targeting the residents of Dhubri and the wider Lower Assam region.

The complaint was filed by social worker Shimul Sarkar before Debashish Bora, seeking immediate legal action against the individual operating a Facebook page under the name “Bhaskarr Dutta.”

According to the complaint, the controversy centers around a recently circulated Facebook video in which the creator allegedly misrepresented local geography to promote a misleading narrative. Sarkar alleged that the video featured a “char” (river island) visible from Netai Dhubuni Ghat in Dhubri and falsely portrayed it as part of Bangladesh.

The complainant claimed that the creator intentionally used the visuals to spread misinformation by allegedly identifying Indian territory as foreign land, thereby creating panic, bias, and negative perceptions about the people of Dhubri and Lower Assam.

Sarkar further alleged that the content contained statements capable of inciting social tension and creating divisions among communities. In his petition, he stated that such “deliberate misinformation” amounted not only to defamation of individuals but also an attack on the dignity and image of the region.

“Such content is capable of creating widespread social stigma and public misunderstanding toward our people,” Sarkar reportedly stated in the complaint. He also emphasized that falsely portraying local land as foreign territory could disturb peace and communal harmony in the sensitive border district.

The social worker urged the Dhubri police to initiate legal proceedings under relevant provisions related to defamation, spreading misinformation, and promoting enmity between different groups.

Police sources said the complaint has been received, and an inquiry into the content of the video and its source is expected to follow.

The incident has also sparked discussions locally regarding the growing influence of digital content creators and concerns over the use of regional stereotypes and misleading narratives for social media engagement.
