Congress–AJP alliance near finalisation; BJP candidates ready for 80 seats: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that the proposed alliance between the Congress party and the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) is almost finalised, with seat-sharing discussions reportedly covering several constituencies across the state.
According to Sarma, constituencies such as Sadiya, Binakandi, Khumtai and Brahmapur are expected to be left for AJP as part of the arrangement. He further stated that the party identified as APHCL is likely to be allotted two seats in Karbi Anglong. Discussions are also underway to allocate two seats to the CPI and one seat to CPI (ML), he added.
However, the Chief Minister said there has been no political understanding so far with the Raijor Dal. “If they are able to bring Raijor Dal into the alliance, we will even congratulate them,” he remarked.
In a sharp political jibe, Sarma asserted that he remains fully aware of internal developments within the Congress. Referring to recent organisational changes, he said even a “change in the docket yesterday created quite a stir,” and claimed he was informed about it. “It is not that Bhupen Borah provides me information — rather, I used to inform him about developments,” Sarma said, targeting the former Assam Congress chief.
The Chief Minister also dismissed suggestions that the opposition alliance could gain momentum by inducting more MLAs. He stated that the BJP’s ticket distribution process is nearly complete, with candidates almost finalised for around 80 seats, leaving little scope for adjustments on the ruling party’s side.
The remarks signal an intensifying political battle in Assam ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, with both the ruling BJP and the opposition camp stepping up strategic positioning over alliances and candidate selection.
