Congress alleges ‘goonda raj’ by BJP in Nagaon; candidate detained by police

Tensions flared in Assam’s Borhampur area of Nagaon district late last night as the Congress Party accused the ruling BJP of unleashing "goonda raj" ahead of the panchayat elections.

The party alleged misuse of administrative machinery to intimidate and obstruct Congress candidates from contesting the polls.

The controversy erupted when Congress candidate Barnali Devi, contesting from the 2 No. Kathiatoli Zila Parishad seat was reportedly detained by police late at night.

According to reports, Barnali had taken shelter at a relative’s house after receiving threats from BJP workers.

Police allegedly picked her up from there without explanation.

The Congress further alleged that their candidates in the Borhampur constituency are facing a growing sense of insecurity, with threats and harassment aimed at forcing them to withdraw nominations.

Adding to the concerns, Congress claimed that police raided the residence of Borhampur Block Congress President Ranjit Bora during the same night, raising serious questions about the impartiality of law enforcement ahead of the elections.

Party leaders have demanded immediate intervention by the Election Commission and protection for opposition candidates to ensure a free and fair election process.
