Congress has lost touch with Assam’s culture: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, January 25 launched a scathing attack on the Congress following a political gathering in Rangiya, describing the event as chaotic and symptomatic of what he termed the party’s growing disconnect from Assam’s culture, traditions, and social values.
Addressing the media, Sarma said he was initially unaware of the meeting. However, he claimed that photographs of the gathering, which were shared with him later in the evening, left him “surprised” by what he described as disorderly scenes rather than an organised political programme.
“The visuals did not resemble a disciplined political meeting. It appeared more like a chaotic show,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Sarma asserted that such conduct reflected the Congress party’s erosion of cultural sensitivity in Assam. He claimed the party had distanced itself from the state’s ethos and warned that its political approach posed concerns for social harmony.
Emphasising the importance of electoral vigilance, the Chief Minister said defeating the Congress in elections was necessary to safeguard both the nation and the community. He urged citizens to remain alert and make democratic choices that uphold Assam’s cultural integrity and values.
Commenting on opposition alliances, Sarma also predicted an eventual tie-up between the Congress and Raijor Dal. “Raijor Dal and the Congress will ultimately come together, and the Miya community will play a role in bringing them closer,” he said.
