Congress heavily dependent on Miya-dominated seats: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, November 23, launched a scathing attack on Congress, claiming the party has been reduced to focusing on only 22 constituencies ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. He alleged that the Congress leadership has asked its prospective candidates to pay substantial sums of money to secure tickets.
“The Congress has nothing left in Assam,” Sarma said. “They are now concentrating only on around 22 constituencies. They will collect money from the candidates; each candidate has been asked to pay Rs 1 crore in advance and another Rs 3 crore later. Candidates from Srijangram, Baghedia-Mandia, Samaria, and Dalgaon have been telling me this,” the Chief Minister claimed.
Sarma further alleged that the Congress is now relying almost entirely on Miya-dominated constituencies, calling them the party’s “oxygen”.
The Chief Minister emphasised that his government has extended various welfare schemes to the Miya community, including Arunodoi and Mahila Udyomita, and clarified that the state has “no issue” with the community.
“Problems arise only when certain individuals attempt to encroach on vacant government land,” Sarma added, reiterating his government’s firm stance on preventing illegal encroachment.
