Congress leader Debabrata Saikia accuses Assam Government of total failure in maintaining law and order in state

Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has launched a scathing attack on the state government, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order despite Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s claims of external conspiracies to destabilize the state.

Addressing the media during a Congress programme in Abhayapuri, Bongaigaon district, Saikia said that if such conspiracies truly exist, it is the responsibility of the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, to ensure that the police identify and take strict action against such elements.

“Instead of making claims, the Chief Minister should direct the police to act decisively. Unfortunately, the Assam Police is not impartial and functions according to the dictates of the government,” Saikia alleged.

Highlighting judicial criticism, Saikia pointed out that the government has faced censure from the High Court over its handling of encounters and eviction drives.

He further alleged that in Umrangso, eviction exercises were followed by the transfer of nearly 3,000 bighas of land to Mahabali Cement Company.

Saikia emphasized that such policies reflect the government’s misplaced priorities, accusing it of working against the interests of ordinary citizens.
