Congress leader forced to retreat from campaign site amid protests in Assam's Goalpara

Congress MLA A.K. Rashid Alam was forced to leave a campaign spot in Goalpara town on Wednesday, April 1, evening after being confronted by a group of voters raising slogans against him.

The legislator, who represents the Goalpara East Assembly constituency, had reached Naya Para locality of Goalpara, as part of his election outreach when the situation turned tense. According to local accounts, residents gathered at the site and began protesting, accusing the MLA of failing to ensure adequate development in the area.

Eyewitnesses said the protest escalated quickly, prompting security personnel present at the location to intervene. Police managed to bring the situation under control, after which Alam left the area without continuing his campaign.

Local residents alleged that longstanding issues related to infrastructure and civic amenities remain unaddressed, which triggered the public outburst during the visit.

The incident comes shortly after the MLA reportedly faced a similar wave of public anger earlier this week, indicating growing discontent among sections of voters in the constituency.

No official statement has been issued by the MLA or the district administration regarding the incidents so far.
