Congress MLA alleges Himanta Biswa Sarma directed party cadres to remove 4–5 lakh 'Miya' voters
Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed on January 28 strongly criticised remarks allegedly made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at various public programmes across Assam, targeting the Miya community. Ahmed said the statements were deeply offensive, unconstitutional, and harmful to Assam’s social fabric.
The MLA took particular objection to the Chief Minister’s reported remark that if a rickshaw fare is ₹5, people should pay only ₹4 to Miya rickshaw pullers. Ahmed said such a statement promotes discrimination and public humiliation of an entire community. He further condemned alleged comments calling for harsh punishment of the Miya people and the removal of a large number of Miya voters, terming them dangerous and undemocratic.
Calling the remarks “shameful,” Ahmed said it was unfortunate that such language was coming from the Chief Minister of Assam. He reminded that Assam is the land of Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhabdeva, Maa Kamakhya and Azan Pir, figures who symbolise unity, harmony, and inclusiveness. “Such statements go against the very ethos of Assam,” he said.
Ahmed accused the BJP-led government of attempting to divide society and destroy communal harmony for political gains. He asserted that the Congress would strongly oppose any attempt to target a community and would continue to fight to protect democracy, secular values, and social harmony in the state.
