Congress MLA highlights Rs 100 crore Chaygaon–Ukiam road project during Christmas visit
Chaygaon MLA Rakibuddin Ahmed toured villages along the Assam–Meghalaya border on December 25, extending Christmas greetings to the Christian community in Santipur, Hakkumari, Ukiam, and Doledonga.
The visit coincided with the festive celebrations and provided an opportunity for the MLA to engage directly with local residents.
During his interactions, Ahmed highlighted key development initiatives in the border areas, including the construction of a 27-km road from Chaygaon to Ukiam, a project costing nearly Rs 100 crore.
Local villagers expressed appreciation, calling the road a crucial step toward improving regional connectivity and overall development.
Addressing the gatherings, Ahmed stressed the importance of peace and communal harmony, firmly opposing any attempts to undermine religious practices. “India is a secular nation. Hence, I strongly oppose any move to control or restrict religious practices,” he stated, underscoring the constitutional protection of faith in the country.
The day-long programme saw the participation of several Congress leaders, including Sabinchandra Boro, President of Bangaon Block Congress; Sahjahan Ali, General Secretary of Kamrup District Congress Committee; and Hazarat Ali, Member of the Pub Chamaria Zila Parishad, alongside other prominent personalities accompanying the MLA during the tour.
The visit reinforced Ahmed’s message of unity, development, and respect for all religions in the region.
