Congress should have declared Pakistan a Muslim nation and India a Hindu country: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Himanta Biswa Sarma, on February 25, said that the Congress failed to demonstrate foresight at the time of India’s Partition, alleging that several crucial decisions were left incomplete during the division with Pakistan, the consequences of which are being felt today in the form of infiltration.

Addressing a press conference, Sarma said the issue of illegal immigration should have been anticipated when the country was partitioned in 1947.

“At the time of independence, when the country was partitioned, these things should have been thought about. We have now started driving outthe  Bangladeshis. We are driving out around 30 people daily. I regularly post about it on X, formerly Twitter. We will drive out more and do it better. We have also made a plan,” he said.

The chief minister further stated that the Supreme Court has empowered Deputy Commissioners to take action in such matters. “No matter how much border fencing you do, people can still enter through natural gaps and ditches. These issues should have been addressed at the time of Partition,” he said.

Sarma argued that the nature of the division between India and Pakistan should have been more clearly defined. “The country was partitioned, and if it was done in this manner, people from Pakistan and Bangladesh would keep coming and one day make India disappear. What should have been done? India should have been declared a Hindu country and Pakistan a Muslim country, or both should have been declared Hindu-Muslim countries,” he said.

Blaming the Indian National Congress for not taking such decisions, Sarma added that the country is now facing the consequences of what he termed historical mistakes, and asserted that his government is committed to addressing the issue of infiltration.
