Congress slams BJP over allegations against Gaurav Gogoi, calls It a political smear campaign

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has strongly condemned the recent allegations made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Colburn. APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah dismissed the accusations as politically motivated and an attempt to divert public attention from the BJP government's failures.

In a press statement, Borah accused the BJP of using diversion tactics to shift focus from key governance issues, including corruption, unemployment, and deteriorating law and order in Assam. He also alleged that the BJP has a history of character assassination to silence opposition leaders.

Gogoi, who has refuted the claims as "laughable," has announced his decision to take legal action against what he calls defamatory accusations. The Congress leadership has challenged the BJP to present concrete evidence instead of spreading what it describes as fake narratives.

The party further defended Elizabeth Colburn, highlighting her credentials as an internationally recognized climate development professional. Congress leaders dismissed allegations linking her to Pakistan’s ISI as baseless conspiracy theories.

With elections approaching, Borah asserted that the BJP is resorting to such tactics to weaken the opposition. He accused the ruling party of deflecting from critical issues such as inflation, ethnic tensions, and unemployment by fabricating controversies.

The APCC reaffirmed its support for Gogoi and urged the Chief Minister to focus on governance rather than engaging in political mudslinging.
