Congress to contest 100 seats, 'friendly contest' with ally in 2 seats: Gaurav Gogoi
With the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9 drawing closer, the Congress has announced an aggressive electoral strategy, indicating it will contest in nearly 100 constituencies while accommodating alliance partners as part of a broader opposition front.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi said the party has finalised its seat-sharing framework, leaving 26 seats for its alliance partners in a bid to consolidate anti-incumbency votes against the BJP.
“Congress has prepared to contest in almost 100 seats. We have allocated 26 seats to our alliance partners, and in two of these constituencies, there will be a friendly contest,” Gogoi stated while addressing the media.
He asserted that the evolving opposition unity has altered the political landscape in the state, putting pressure on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to Gogoi, the BJP’s earlier electoral calculations are now facing a “massive change” as opposition forces come together ahead of the polls.
“The BJP is feeling pressured and apprehensive. They did not anticipate that opposition parties would unite and present a cohesive challenge in the 2026 Assembly elections,” he said.
Emphasising the rationale behind the alliance, Gogoi noted that the move reflects public sentiment in Assam. “This is what the people of Assam wished for, and we have decided to honour that by building a united opposition,” he added.
