CPI flags landslide threat in Assam’s Ledo, says coal mining waste puts 60 families at risk
Unscientific coal mining and the dumping of mining waste into natural streams have allegedly triggered a potentially dangerous situation in Ledo Jharnabasti under Assam's Margherita Co-District, with deep cracks appearing in houses and roads affecting nearly 60 families.
Local residents are increasingly concerned about the possibility of landslides after coal mining waste allegedly blocked the natural flow of water in streams in the area.
A delegation of the Communist Party of India (CPI), led by Assam State Council member Sanjeev Gangooly, visited the affected locality on Thursday to assess the situation.
Following the visit, Gangooly expressed strong resentment against the Union and Assam governments as well as the authorities of North Eastern Coalfields (NEC), Coal India Limited, in Margherita, alleging that unchecked mining activities had put the lives and property of residents at risk.
He said unscientific mining carried out in the name of development had created serious threats for local communities.
The CPI leader demanded an immediate scientific survey of the affected area to assess the extent of the damage and determine the risks to residents.
He also called for adequate compensation and safe rehabilitation of the affected families, while appealing to local residents to remain alert.
This correspondent attempted to contact the Margherita Co-District Administration and NEC, Coal India Limited officials for their response, but they could not be reached.
