Daylight robbery in Assam: Car window smashed, Rs 2 lakh looted near SBI in Kokrajhar

In yet another alarming incident of daytime crime, a daring robbery took place today near the SBI Main Branch in Kokrajhar, where miscreants smashed a car window and looted Rs 2 lakh from a parked vehicle.

The victim, Barenda Basumatary, a businessman from Gwjwnpuri village, had parked his Bolero vehicle and stepped away briefly to photocopy documents, leaving a bag of cash inside. Seizing the opportunity, an unknown individual broke the car’s window and escaped with the money.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at Kokrajhar Police Station, and police have launched a probe into the theft.

This incident adds to a growing series of daylight robberies in Kokrajhar. On June 26, 2024, two men on a motorcycle snatched a bag containing Rs 34 lakh from a person near Axis Bank on JD Road. Just twelve days later, on July 9, a forest department official lost Rs 2.15 lakh near UCO Bank, after being distracted by decoy currency notes thrown behind his car.

The latest robbery has intensified public concerns over safety and raised serious questions about the effectiveness of local security and surveillance measures. Authorities have assured heightened patrolling and prompt investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
