'Death toll may rise': Himanta says 70-80 still missing as Assam flood crisis deepens

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 23 said the flood situation in the state remains extremely serious, revealing that 70 to 80 people are still missing and warning that the death toll could rise further.

Addressing reporters in Golaghat, Sarma said 40 people have lost their lives so far, but the government's assessment indicates that several people remain unaccounted for in the worst-affected districts.

"The flood situation in Assam is quite serious. So far, 40 people have died, but according to our assessment, there are still 70 to 80 people missing. I estimate that the casualty figure will rise further," the Chief Minister said.

Sarma attributed the devastation to a cloudburst in Nagaland, saying the sudden influx of water severely impacted four districts of Upper Assam.

"This entire situation arose because of a cloudburst in Nagaland. Water came from the floodwaters and severely affected our four districts," he said.

The Chief Minister also said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had spoken to him and assured full support from the Centre.

"Union Home Minister Amit Shah called me just now and informed me that an inter-ministerial team will be sent to Assam today or tomorrow. I believe that both governments together will be able to stand with the people in this time of grief," Sarma said.

The state government has intensified relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit districts, while central teams are expected to assess the damage and recommend assistance as the crisis continues.
