Debabrata moves adjournment motion to discuss death of Zubeen Garg in Singapore
The winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly opened on a tense note as Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia moved an Adjournment Motion demanding clarity on the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of music icon Zubeen Garg and the government’s continued silence on the issue.
Raising the matter in the House, Saikia said Zubeen Garg was not merely a celebrated singer but an irreplaceable cultural treasure of Assam, and therefore any lapse concerning his safety warranted immediate accountability.
Saikia questioned why the Assam Government failed to ensure adequate security arrangements for an artist of Zubeen’s stature during his visit to Singapore.
He asked why no dedicated security personnel accompanied him despite his involvement in a high-profile international event.
The Opposition leader also criticised what he termed “disorder and delay” in bringing back Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains from Singapore to Guwahati.
He sought clarity on who was responsible for the mismanagement and why the government failed to respond swiftly during such an emotionally charged and sensitive situation.
Saikia further pointed out that the incident occurred during Zubeen’s participation in the Northeast Festival, an event organised under the patronage of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Given this association, he said, both the Central and Assam Governments share responsibility and cannot distance themselves from the unfolding developments.
