Debabrata Saikia accuses Assam CM of attempting to discredit Congress leaders, divert attention from Zubeen case
Congress leader Debabrata Saikia, has accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of attempting to malign Congress leaders by spreading “false perceptions” concerning Gaurav Gogoi.
In a statement, Saikia alleged that the Chief Minister has been making repeated remarks about Gaurav Gogoi’s 2024 visit to Pakistan merely to draw media attention and remain politically relevant. “From September 10 till now, as November 10 nears, the Chief Minister has been constantly referring to his failed film just to maintain his visibility,” Saikia remarked, adding that if the Chief Minister truly possesses any credible evidence against Gaurav Gogoi, he should place it before the public.
Saikia further hit out at the Chief Minister for his recent comments related to the FIR purportedly filed in connection with singer Zubeen Garg’s alleged murder, claiming that such statements are an attempt to divert attention from the real circumstances surrounding the artist’s death.
“The Chief Minister is trying to shift focus from the truth behind Zubeen Garg’s death by making sensational remarks,” Saikia alleged, urging him to act responsibly and refrain from politicising sensitive matters.
Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) vice president Naba Talukdar strongly criticised the Chief Minister over the alleged delay in releasing the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report concerning Gogoi’s supposed links with Pakistan.
Talukdar said that despite the Chief Minister’s assurance that the report would be submitted by September 10, it remains unpublished even as November begins. “Now he says it will be released in December. This is nothing but an attempt to mislead the public,” Talukdar remarked.
He further alleged that the Chief Minister has no substantial evidence against Gogoi. “If he truly has proof, why is he hiding it? Any evidence concerning Pakistan cannot be suppressed as it involves national sovereignty. The Chief Minister alone will be responsible for such concealment,” he added.
Accusing the government of using SITs as a political diversion, Talukdar said, “By delaying the report, the Chief Minister is indirectly helping Pakistan. If Gaurav Gogoi is really an agent, why is he being allowed to move freely? Either take action or admit there is no evidence.”
Talukdar also linked the delay to an attempt to deflect public attention from the Zubeen Garg case, alleging, “The SIT report has not been made public because they wanted to divert focus using Zubeen Garg’s death.”
The Congress leader concluded by stating that national security should not be reduced to a political distraction. “Zubeen Garg’s soul will never forgive this government. It was Zubeen’s songs that helped the BJP rise to power, but the same government has failed to deliver justice for him,” Talukdar said.
