Decomposed body of missing Assam man found near Indo-Bhutan border; murder suspected

The decomposed body of 29-year-old Raj Kumar Sarkar was recovered from a forested area near the Indo-Bhutan border under mysterious circumstances.

Sarkar, a resident of Khatlapara under the Singa Police Station in Assam’s Chirang district, had been missing since June 12.

According to officials, the body was found in a decomposed state in a reserved forest area near Lungsung, Devoalguri village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Bishmuri Police Station in Kokrajhar district. The location is close to the Indo-Bhutan international border.

Sources revealed that Sarkar was last seen with a man named Ajay Mandal, also a resident of Khatlapara. On June 12, Mandal allegedly took Sarkar out of the village, after which the latter never returned home.

Raj Kumar’s family lodged a missing person report at the Basugaon Police Station shortly after he disappeared. As suspicion grew, Ajay Mandal and his family members were interrogated during the police investigation.

“Based on clues and ongoing inquiries, the body was located in a remote forested area. The condition of the remains suggests that the death occurred several days ago,” said Amathi Kumar Mahato, Aditional SP (Crime), Chirang Police. He confirmed that a detailed post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Police suspect foul play and are treating the case as a potential murder. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the motive and circumstances behind the death.

Officers Biplab Kaur, Officer-in-Charge of Basugaon Police Station, and Sunil Kumar Gurung, In-Charge of Santipur Outpost, were instrumental in the recovery operation and subsequent follow-up.

Authorities have assured a thorough investigation and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
