Delimitation opens new doors: Asom Gana Parishad eyes bigger role in SC reserved seats
With an eye firmly on the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, NDA ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has intensified its organisational push by convening an extended central executive meeting of its key frontal body, the Scheduled Caste Parishad, at Kunwaritol in Kaliabor on Wednesday, February 4.
The meeting is seen as part of AGP’s broader strategy to consolidate its base among Scheduled Caste communities at a time when electoral equations in the state are being reshaped following the constituency delimitation exercise.
Addressing party leaders and workers, AGP president Atul Bora underlined that the delimitation process has resulted in an increase in the number of Assembly seats reserved for Scheduled Castes, opening up fresh political opportunities.
He stressed that the party would place strong emphasis on organisational strengthening and grassroots mobilisation to maximise its performance in these constituencies.
Bora also made it clear that AGP would seek a stronger footing within the NDA alliance, asserting that the party’s seat share and overall representation would be a key priority during forthcoming seat-sharing negotiations ahead of the 2026 polls.
